The Role of Social Accountability Coalition (SAC)

Recognizing the critical role of governance improvement and social accountability (SA) in bolstering local democracy, increasing citizen participation, and promoting transparency and accountability in governance, 7-plus member INGOs active in more than 45 countries, as well as two national networks, formed the Social Accountability Coalition on October 31, 2024, with their consent and non-legally binding obligations, at the Inter Luxury Hotel in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The Social Accountability Coalition (SAC) was established by World Vision, Concern Worldwide, Helvetas, Amref Health Africa, VNG Int, Ayuda en Acción, People in Need (PIN), Ethiopian Civil Society Organisation Council (ECSOC), and National Social Accountability Consortium (NaSAC). SAC will collaborate to serve as a platform for exchanging knowledge, building capacities, and coordinating actions. It will also improve communication, collaboration, and coordination across organisations that work to support governance and social accountability projects. Committed to advancing these objectives, the coalition aims to ensure the institutionalization and long-term sustainability of governance reforms and social accountability practices throughout the country.

Since its inception by approving its strategic plan (2025-2027), the coalition has begun its work, chaired by the National Social Accountability Consortium. SAC welcomes any INGOs and Consortia who can be members or affiliated bodies for SAC to work on the following areas:

  1. Joint Research and Knowledge Sharing
  2. Promote Coordination and Collaboration
  3. Capacity Building
  4. Advocacy and Policy Engagement
