Biftu Bira for Humanitarian Organization (BB4HO)

1.      Introduction

Biftu Bira for Humanitarian Organization (BB4HO) is an Ethiopian Civil Society Organization (CSO) established in 2009 G.C by five youths (three male and two female) who formed a grassroots club under a tree in Butte Fillicha kebele, Melka Oda district, West Arsi zone of Shashemene city. Initially focused on addressing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and environmental protection, the organization evolved into a nationally recognized, youth-led NGO that has received a wide acceptance for its exemplary contributions to youth development. BB4HO is officially registered under the Federal Civil Societies Authority Proclamation No. 1113/2019 with registration number 4463, allowing it to operate in all regions and city administrations across Ethiopia. Since its registration in September 2019 G.C, BB4HO has aligned its community development programs with national strategies such as the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan, the National Reproductive Health Strategy, and the National Adolescent and Youth RH Strategies.

BB4HO addresses key development areas including health, education, peacebuilding, youth and women empowerment, democracy, human rights, and climate change adaptation. Its health programs promote maternal and child health, hygiene, and community healthcare. In education, it supports inclusive learning and integrates peacebuilding into schools. The organization fosters social cohesion through youth-led peace initiatives and dialogue. It also advances environmental sustainability through education, reforestation, and climate-smart agriculture. BB4HO empowers youth and women through entrepreneurship training, leadership development, and economic support. Additionally, it promotes civic engagement and human rights awareness, especially among marginalized groups. All efforts are rooted in community-led, participatory approaches for lasting impact and social justice.

Mission: BB4HO strives to promote the health, peace and development of the community, by working on reproductive health, peace building, community leadership skill enhancement, Capacity Building activities & engaging in developmental activity”.

3.      Major programmatic Focus Areas

Biftu Bira for Humanitarian Organization (BB4HO) is a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development in Ethiopia. The organization operates across multiple sectors, including health, education, peacebuilding, climate action, economic empowerment, and human rights. BB4HO promotes maternal and child health, hygiene, and community-based healthcare, while supporting access to inclusive, quality education and youth- friendly services. It facilitates peacebuilding through youth-led dialogue and community conflict resolution, and addresses climate challenges through environmental education, reforestation, and

climate-smart agriculture. BB4HO empowers women and youth with leadership training, entrepreneurship support, and advocacy for gender equality. Additionally, it strengthens livelihoods through financial literacy and small business support, while promoting civic engagement and human rights awareness. All programs are grounded in participatory, community-led approaches that foster long-term impact and social justice.

4.      Previously Implemented and Currently Ongoing Projects

Biftu Bira for Humanitarian Organization (BB4HO) has a proven track record in implementing impactful, community-driven initiatives across various thematic areas. Notable completed projects include Improving Compliance Response Mechanism, Voice for Choice (V4C) and Youth for Health (Y4H), which emphasized civic engagement, health awareness, and youth leadership. The organization successfully implemented the Ethiopian Social Accountability Project 3 (ESAP3) and Strengthening Women-Led Community Reconciliation, showcasing its commitment to gender equity and accountable governance. BB4HO also led the Community-led Conflict Transformation through Participatory Action Research (PAR) project—Phase 1 completed, and Phase 2 currently underway—demonstrating its experience in peacebuilding and grassroots research. Further contributions to social cohesion and inter-community harmony have been made through projects such as Strengthening Youth Centers for Social Cohesion (ORO119), Leveraging Art & Sport for Social Cohesion (ORO115), Promoting Amhara and Oromo Relations (ORO064), and Combating Hate Speech & Dis/Misinformation through Youth (ORO040). The organization has also engaged communities through Conducting Consultative Workshop (ORO020). Currently, BB4HO is implementing the Fit for the Future (F4F) project and Integrated Youth-Friendly Services at Youth Empowerment Center, further strengthening its role in inclusive development and social resilience.

5.      Partnership

Biftu Bira for Humanitarian Organization (BB4HO) collaborates with a diverse network of partners to enhance the effectiveness and reach of its programs. These include local administrations and sector offices, which provide essential coordination and support at the community level, as well as Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) that help mobilize grassroots participation. International partners such as the German Foundation for World Population (DSW, Ethiopia), USAID/OTI, Life & Peace Institute (LPI), Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), and the International Republican Institute (IRI) contribute technical expertise, funding, and capacity-building support. BB4HO also partners with national NGOs like Tamra for Social Development (TSD) and Mekdim Ethiopia National Association (MENA) to strengthen implementation, advocacy, and service delivery. These partnerships enable BB4HO to deliver holistic, impactful, and sustainable interventions across its focus areas.
